There is a small, quiet revolution happening in the way professionals actually search the web in 2026. Ask a serious analyst, investor, journalist or consultant which tab they open when they want a real answer, and the honest response is increasingly not Google. It is Perplexity. This is a detailed review from an editorial team that has replaced Google as its default research surface for the last twelve months.
Perplexity is not trying to be a chatbot. It is trying to be a research tool with the fluency of a chatbot, and that framing explains almost everything that is good and bad about the product.

What Perplexity actually is
Perplexity is an AI-native search engine. You ask a question in natural language and it returns a written answer with numbered citations to the sources it used. There is no ten-blue-links page and no advertising slot at the top. The interface is a chat, not a search box, but the mental model is closer to a research assistant than to a chatbot: every claim is supposed to point to a source you can verify.
How we tested it
Twenty-five research briefs pulled from real editorial work โ market sizing, executive backgrounds, product landscape scans, factual verification, historical context โ plus five deliberately adversarial queries where we knew the correct answer was obscure or contested. Every query was also run in ChatGPT with browsing, Gemini with Deep Research, and Google itself.
The core search experience
Perplexity feels faster than it is. Answers stream immediately, with source cards appearing along the top of the response. The suggested follow-up questions are unusually good โ often the question you would have asked next but had not yet formed. For linear research where you are drilling down a topic, this loop is genuinely faster than any traditional workflow we have used.
Pro Search and the case for citations
Pro Search is the feature that separates Perplexity from a plain chatbot with browsing turned on. It chains multiple retrievals per query, evaluates and refines, and produces an answer designed to be traceable. In our tests, Pro Search consistently produced better-organized citations than ChatGPT or Gemini for the same query โ fewer broken links, fewer citations to the wrong page inside a source, and clearer separation between what came from where.
Spaces โ the underrated feature
Spaces are Perplexity's answer to the problem of long-running research. You create a Space, optionally attach files or a system prompt, and every question you ask inside it inherits that context. It is a small feature, and it changes how you work: instead of forty scattered searches, you end up with a dozen coherent research projects. If you have not used Spaces, they are the single reason to try Pro.
Comet, the assistant browser
Perplexity's Comet browser is a bet on a different UI paradigm โ the AI assistant lives in the sidebar of your normal web browsing, and can act on the page you are looking at. It is early, occasionally rough, and genuinely useful for anyone whose research involves reading a lot of pages in sequence. Worth trying if you already like the core product.
Model choice on the Pro tier
Pro subscribers can route queries through a choice of frontier models โ GPT, Claude and others. This matters more than it sounds. For heavily analytical queries we default to Claude; for fast factual lookups we let Perplexity pick. Having the choice inside a single search interface is quietly the most flexible research setup we have used.
Pricing and value
The free tier is enough to fall in love with the product but not enough to rely on it. Pro sits at the standard twenty-dollar-a-month reference price and unlocks unlimited Pro Search, file uploads, Spaces power features and model choice. For anyone whose job involves research, it pays for itself in the first week.
Who should use Perplexity
- Analysts, consultants and strategists
- Investors doing due diligence
- Journalists and researchers
- Anyone who cites sources professionally
- Any knowledge worker tired of ad-clogged search results
Who should skip it
- People who want a full chatbot with image generation, voice and custom assistants โ ChatGPT is a better fit
- Casual searchers whose needs are met by Google's AI Overviews
- Teams needing a compliance-heavy enterprise search โ different category of tool
Alternatives
ChatGPT with browsing, Gemini's Deep Research, and You.com are the direct competitors. Each has strengths. Perplexity still wins on citation clarity and speed of the research loop for most professional queries.
Frequently asked questions
Is Perplexity better than Google?
For research queries where you want an actual answer, yes โ comfortably. For local, transactional or navigational queries, Google still wins.
Are the citations trustworthy?
Mostly yes, but not blindly. Perplexity occasionally cites low-quality sources, especially on niche topics. Always spot-check a citation before quoting it in professional work.
What is the difference between free and Pro?
Free gives you limited Pro Search per day and a single default model. Pro unlocks unlimited Pro Search, file uploads, Spaces, model choice and higher rate limits.
Does Perplexity replace ChatGPT?
No โ the two are complementary. Perplexity is a research surface; ChatGPT is a general-purpose thinking and making surface. Serious professionals typically use both.
Is it available on mobile?
Yes โ the mobile apps on iOS and Android are among the best-designed in the category, and voice search on mobile is a genuinely useful reading-assistant.
The verdict
Perplexity is the best AI search experience on the market and, for anyone doing research as a core part of their job, the most obviously worthwhile subscription of 2026. Editor's Choice.
